Martial Arts

Ancient self-defense techniques and meditation in movement

ActiveDry 1.5 hours – several days Year-round 3 places

What it is and why

Vietnamese martial arts (Vo Van) are famous for their flexibility and powerful use of legs. The most famous school, Vovinam (Vovinam Viet Vo Dao), combines applied self-defense and elements of acrobatics. Many schools are open for foreigners: you can take both single training in traditional dojo and pass intensive weekly course under guidance of master.

Trainings take place in authentic setting: either in old city studios saturated with smell of incense, or outdoors in parks, where masters gather at dawn. This is an ideal way to feel Vietnamese discipline, develop coordination and understand why local philosophy is so closely connected with fighting spirit.

Tips

  • For first training choose light cotton clothing that does not restrict movement.
  • If you want to see real masters, come to city parks (for example, Thong Nhat park in Hanoi) at 6 am: there every day free classes for all comers take place.
  • Do not be shy to ask permission for photo or video — masters with respect treat interest to their culture.

Caution

  • Martial arts require serious load — before training necessarily conduct quality warm-up.
  • Avoid "tourist" schools in entertainment centers, better look for dojos recommended by local martial arts federations.
