Founded by Lord Nguyễn Hoàng, the pagoda is shrouded in legends about the "Celestial Lady." The symbol of the temple is the seven-tiered Phước Duyên tower (1844), with each level representing one of the incarnations of the Buddha.

The grounds house two objects recognized as national treasures: the Đại Hồng Chung bell (1710), weighing about 2 tons, and a massive stone stele on the back of a marble turtle, erected in 1715.

The pagoda became the center of the Buddhist resistance in 1963. It was from here that protests began, leading to political changes in the country. It also houses the Austin Westminster car in which the legendary Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức traveled to Saigon to perform an act of self-immolation.
The Complex
The Complex
Aside from the tower, the complex includes the main Đại Hùng Hall with unique wooden carvings, a series of halls (Ksitigarbha, Avalokiteshvara), and an ancient pine forest with memorial stupas of past abbots.
