What you need to know
The citadel was built between 1805 and 1832, modeled after French Vauban fortifications. The complex is divided into three levels: the outer Citadel (Kinh Thành), the Imperial City (Hoàng Thành), and the Forbidden Purple City (Tử Cấm Thành), which was closed to everyone except the emperor's family.
Today, visitors can explore the Ngo Mon Gate, the luxurious Thai Hoa Palace, the Duyet Tien Royal Theater, the Nine Dynastic Urns, and numerous pavilions. Despite past wartime destruction, the site is actively being restored and remains the primary symbol of the country's imperial past.
The most comfortable time for walking around the complex: air temperatures stay within 20–28°C, with minimal rain.
