What you need to know
Phan Thiet is one of the most important centers for fish sauce production in Vietnam. The region has around 200 operations where the fermentation process takes place in huge wooden barrels under the hot sun for 8 to 18 months.
What awaits visitors:
- Technology: Learn about the extraction process of "nuoc mam nhi" (first press) and subsequent production stages.
- Experience: At family-run factories, you can not only observe the process but also participate in it.
- Tasting and Shopping: Buy fresh products directly at the factory, with quality guaranteed by the producer.
Note: The production facility has a very intense, distinct odor that you should be prepared for. Vietnamese producers are actively working to officially include this craft in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The best period to visit, as this is when the highest quality fish is caught, directly affecting the protein richness and flavor of the future sauce.
