The A1 National Martyrs Cemetery is a sacred place for the Vietnamese people, located in the heart of Dien Bien Phu city. It is the resting place of 644 heroes who gave their lives in the decisive Battle of Dien Bien Phu. Visiting this complex is considered an important tradition for those wishing to pay their respects to the participants in the country's liberation from colonial rule.

What you need to know
The cemetery was established in 1958 and covers an area of 3.2 hectares near the historic A1 Hill. The entrance to the memorial is designed like an ancient fortress with a 6-meter-wide moat, and the central monument is built in the style of the classical Vietnamese Khue Van Cac pavilion, decorated with 644 stars representing the soldiers buried here.
Many graves remain unidentified, but the resting places of four legendary commanders—Phan Dinh Giot, To Vinh Dien, Be Van Dan, and Tran Can—are specially marked. The complex grounds are well-maintained, abundant with greenery and old trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Large-scale renovation work was carried out in 1994 and 2013 to preserve this historical heritage for future generations.
The dry and cool season is the ideal time to visit Dien Bien Phu and stroll through the open-air memorial complexes.
