The Bunker of General de Castries is a key site for understanding the course of the decisive 1954 battle. Located in the heart of the Muong Thanh Valley, this underground command post was the headquarters of Brigadier General Christian de Castries and the site of the finale of the siege that changed the course of history. Visiting this place allows you to see firsthand the conditions in which historical decisions were made and to appreciate the scale of the confrontation.

What you need to know
The de Castries bunker was designed to be 2 meters below ground level, providing strategic protection. Measuring 20 × 8 meters, the structure consisted of four compartments for command work and rest. The construction was reinforced with corrugated steel, wood, and sandbags.
Today, the structure of the bunker is preserved in its original form. In 2014, for the 60th anniversary of the battle, a concrete protective roof was erected over it. Inside, visitors can see authentic artifacts: battle maps, bamboo and wooden partitions, the general's desk, and communication equipment. The perimeter around the bunker is complemented by restored trenches, examples of artillery pieces, and tanks, which help fully immerse visitors in the atmosphere of 1954.
The dry season offers the most favorable conditions. March is especially interesting due to preparations for the battle anniversary. Avoid July and August due to heavy rainfall.
