Hill A1 is one of the key locations in Vietnam's history, situated in the center of Dien Bien Phu city. In 1954, this hill served as the last defensive line of the French command post. Today, it is a crucial historical memorial where you can see the preserved trench system, bunkers, and the crater from a colossal underground explosion that predetermined the outcome of the battle.

What you need to know
Hill A1 (Eliane 2) is a low hill rising 32 meters above the Muong Thanh Valley, which was the most heavily fortified French position in 1954. On May 6, 1954, Vietnamese combat engineers performed a feat by digging a tunnel under the hill and planting 960 kg of explosives. The powerful explosion allowed Vietnamese troops to breach the defense, leading to the rapid capitulation of the French garrison.
