History and Significance
The fortress was built in 1592 during the war between the Mac and Le dynasties. According to legend, it was constructed in a single night as an emergency outpost to control routes along the Lo River. For 85 years it served as an arena for military conflict, and later, in the 19th century, it was renovated by the Nguyen dynasty. In 2001, the site was recognized as a National Historical Monument of Vietnam.
What to See
Today, visitors can see the remains of two city gates, stone walls made of laterite and rock (up to 4 meters high), and the Tho Son earthen rampart, which is reached by 193 stone steps. On the ancient bricks, you can still spot bullet marks and shrapnel scars left from 20th-century military conflicts.
The mountain climate of Tuyen Quang is most pleasant during this time, making it ideal for walking around the fortress grounds.
