The Ho Dynasty Citadel is an outstanding example of a centralized princely city, built in 1397. As the capital of Vietnam in the early 15th century, the complex impresses with its engineering prowess: the walls are erected from huge limestone blocks without mortar. Visiting this place is an opportunity to touch history, study ancient construction methods, and see artifacts found during large-scale archaeological excavations.

What you need to know
The 155.5-hectare complex includes three key components: the inner citadel, the La Thanh outer wall, and the Nam Giao altar. The architecture of the citadel combines geomantic principles with Confucian planning traditions.
What to see:
- South Gate: home to an open-air exhibition of archaeological finds.
- Exhibition spaces: dedicated to the history of the Ho dynasty, construction methods, and traditional crafts of the region.
- The grounds: well-preserved wall fragments and moats reflecting the defensive grandeur of the citadel.
Free guided tours are available within the complex. We recommend taking advantage of one of the four tourist programs covering both the citadel itself and its spiritual buffer zone.
