The Mac Dynasty Fortress is a monument of Vietnamese fortification built during the turbulent times of the 16th century. What you need to know
The fortress was built between the late 16th and mid-17th centuries to deter attacks by the southern army. The uniqueness of its construction lies in the use of mortar made from honey and cane sugar to bond the massive stone blocks.
Two sections of walls with a total length of about 300 meters have survived to this day. Although there was no original staircase, a modern stone staircase of more than 100 steps allows visitors to comfortably reach the top. The site is part of the large historical complex of "Nhi-Tam Thanh" (over 50 hectares), which includes caves and pagodas, making it a must-visit point on any itinerary in northern Vietnam.
