About the place

What you need to know

Hòn Vọng Phu is located just 3 km southwest of the center of Thanh Hóa City. The rock is an important cultural symbol, officially granted national monument status in 1992. According to legend, the rock's image is the embodiment of a woman who turned to stone due to her loyalty and endless waiting.

The path to the top of Mount Nhồi goes through hundreds of stone steps and takes about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace. Near the natural formation is a complex of attractions, including the Thánh Sơn Temple and other shrines.

Important: In June 2022, the monument was damaged by a thunderstorm: a landslide occurred and the rock tilted by 10-15 degrees. In August 2025, the provincial government allocated 13.6 billion VND for the restoration and strengthening of the site, so access to the summit may be temporarily restricted for safety reasons.
