Phat Diem Cathedral is an outstanding historical monument built in the late 19th century by Catholic priest Tran Luc. The complex is unique because Vietnamese architectural styles were exclusively used in the construction of this European sanctuary, making the building resemble luxurious palaces and temples rather than traditional Gothic cathedrals.

What you need to know
Construction began in 1875 and took 24 years, carried out entirely by manual labor. The main materials used were stone and ironwood. The main cathedral is supported by 52 pillars, and its altar is carved from a single piece of stone.
The 22-hectare complex includes the main cathedral, five chapels, artificial stone grottoes, a lake, and the impressive three-tiered Phuong Dinh bell tower. The cathedral is also known for inspiring Graham Greene to write one of the dramatic scenes in his novel "The Quiet American." Today, it is an active center of the Catholic diocese and a national historic monument.
