Ong Met Pagoda (Wat Kompong) is not just an architectural monument, but the center of spiritual life for the Khmer community in the Mekong Delta. Founded as early as the 7th century, it has endured through the centuries, preserving unique traditions and serving as the headquarters of the Executive Board of the Mahanikaya order of Khmer Theravada Buddhism.

What you need to know
Located at No. 50/1 Lê Lợi Street, Trà Vinh City, Ong Met Pagoda is one of the three oldest temples in the province. Its history spans from its initial construction in 642 to its relocation to the current site in 711.
Architectural features:
The temple occupies a spacious area of 12,700 sq. m. Special attention is drawn to the main building, which rests on 32 massive wooden columns. The interior is richly decorated with carvings reflecting the life of the Khmer people. The main shrine features a monumental statue of Shakyamuni Buddha (4.4 meters high) seated on a lotus flower.
In 2009, the site received the status of a national architectural and artistic monument. Today, alongside the temple, a Khmer secondary school operates within the complex.
