What you need to know
Nguyen Thi Suot (1908-1968) at the age of 56 voluntarily took on the dangerous job of ferrying boats across the Nhat Le River in Dong Hoi. Between 1964 and 1967, she made more than 1,400 trips a year, transporting the wounded, soldiers, and ammunition under incessant bombardment.
The 7-meter-high monument, created by sculptor Phan Dinh Tien, depicts a resolute woman with an oar and a billowing parachute over her shoulders. Scenes of wartime life are engraved on the pedestal. Today, visitors can see the historic pier next to the monument and use the QR code installed here to learn details about the heroine's life.
