What you need to know
The citadel was erected in 1812 under Emperor Gia Long on the site of ancient fortifications dating back to 1631. The architectural style combines the French Vauban system with traditional Vietnamese construction methods. Originally, the fortress was square-shaped with sides of 500 meters and high six-meter walls.
To this day, the Quang Binh Gate (Eastern Gate) facing the Nhat Le River, the Western Gate on Quang Truong Street, as well as fragments of the brick walls and moat have survived. Visiting this place allows you to trace the changes in the appearance of the city, which has gone through major upheavals, and enjoy the river view.
