History
Bac Ninh Citadel, founded in 1805 under Emperor Gia Long, is a monument of fortification architecture from the first half of the 19th century. This strategic structure, designed using the European Vauban star-fort system, long served as a defensive shield for the capital Thang Long (Hanoi). The site is of immense interest as an example of the Nguyen Dynasty's adaptation of Western military technology.

What you need to know
The citadel covers an area of 545,000 sq. m and was originally surrounded by massive brick walls 9 meters high with a system of moats. Currently, the citadel is in a semi-ruined state, but this is precisely what gives it a special historical atmosphere.
Main attractions:
- Main gate: the best-preserved fragment with a watchtower.
- Flagpole: a prominent symbol about 20 meters high.
- Cannons: two antique cannons are preserved on the grounds.
The citadel grounds combine the functions of a historical site and an active administrative zone (Political Training School), and the fortification walls are actively used by locals for morning exercises.
Dry season with comfortable air temperatures. In summer (July–August), visiting can be difficult due to heat and high humidity, and June often sees rain.
