Vinh Ancient Citadel is a landmark site that vividly illustrates the synthesis of European and East Asian engineering approaches in 19th-century defense construction. Built during the Nguyen dynasty, it long served as a vital administrative and strategic center of Nghe An province. Today, despite the loss of some structures, the citadel remains an important national historical monument.

History and architecture
The citadel was founded in 1804 under Emperor Gia Long as a hexagonal earthen fortification. In 1831, under Emperor Minh Mang, it was significantly rebuilt using durable laterite stone (đá ong). The total area of the complex is about 420,000 m².
The defensive system was created according to the French Vauban principle: two concentric ramparts and a deep moat (up to 28 meters wide) connected to the Vinh River. In the past, it housed barracks, the governor's residence, and administrative buildings. To this day, the Cửa Tiền, Cửa Tả, and Cửa Hữu gates have survived, with the western gate (Cửa Hữu) in the best condition. In the northeastern part, you can still see the original walls 3–4 meters high.
