Cultural Heritage

Coi Nguon Museum (meaning "origins" in Vietnamese) was founded in 2009 by researcher Huynh Phuoc Hue. It is a large-scale private project that has gathered a collection of 5,000 unique objects over 15 years. The museum offers a deep dive into the island's history: from archaeological finds to marine flora and fauna. Despite the venerable age of some exhibits (up to 1,000 years), the museum building maintains the atmosphere of an authentic research gallery.

About the place

What you need to know

The museum spans five floors and covers an area of over 1,000 square meters, offering a diverse exhibition:

  • 1st floor:

Introduction to the island's marine nature — from pearls to stuffed turtles and sand samples from Phu Quoc beaches. There is also a temple, a cafe, and a souvenir shop located here.

  • 2nd and 3rd floors:

The historical heart of the collection. Here you will find ancient ceramics, porcelain, antique coins, and Stone Age weapons. UNESCO experts have confirmed the value of over 2,500 displayed artifacts.

  • 4th floor:

The main exhibit is the remains of a merchant ship that sank about 100 years ago. Historical photographs are also on display, including materials about the Coconut Prison and independence fighters.

  • 5th floor:

An observation deck offering a panoramic view of the northern part of the island.

Important:

The museum looks quite simple and is in need of renovation in places. Information in English is limited, so we recommend viewing the visit as part of a broader island tour.

November — April

The dry season is the ideal time to visit. We recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid the heat, as the inside of the building can get stuffy.
