Khoai Dong Cathedral is a unique architectural monument erected by Spanish Dominicans in 1941. Combining Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine styles, it is the only building in Vietnam with such a rare dome construction. Located on the shore of Vi Xuyen Lake, the cathedral has come a long way from destruction to extensive restoration, once again becoming the pride of Nam Dinh's residents.

What you need to know
Construction of the cathedral began in 1934 and was completed in 1941. The building is shaped like a cross (65 m long and 16 m wide), with its main prominent feature being an impressive dome 16 meters in diameter and 35 meters in height.
History and Architecture:
- Style: A synthesis of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine directions.
- Details: The 37-meter-high tower houses historical bells, and the roof is decorated with authentic stained glass mosaics.
- Fate: After 1954, the cathedral was repurposed—serving as warehouses, a cinema hall, and workshops. The building suffered from airstrikes in 1966, the traces of which could be seen on the walls.
- Revival: In 2008, the process of returning the cathedral to the Catholic community began, followed by extensive restoration. The official consecration of the restored cathedral took place on December 27, 2014.
