The Hai Phong Opera House is a historic building constructed in 1912 on the site of the old An Bien market. It is not only an architectural masterpiece erected by French craftsmen, but also a landmark for Vietnam's history: it was here in 1945 that the first Viet Minh rally took place, and in 1946 the building became a bastion of heroic defense against colonial troops. Today, it is a national architectural treasure where classical art meets folk traditions.

What you need to know
Architecture The theater is built in the neoclassical style with a clear influence from the Paris Opera. Inside, visitors will find exquisite Gothic elements, luxurious spiral staircases, and Greek-style ceiling paintings. The main hall, with a capacity of 400 seats, is decorated with red plush, and the building features a total of 100 windows and doors, numerous foyers, and a buffet.
Historical significance The building is a witness to key events of the First Indochina War. In November 1946, 39 defenders of the theater held their ground against French soldiers for three days, forever inscribing this place into the heroic chronicles of the city.
Cultural program The theater serves as a stage for a wide range of arts: from classical opera and symphonic music to traditional Vietnamese genres such as hát tuồng, hát chèo, cải lương, and quan họ.
