Thuong Temple (Đền Thượng) is the historical and spiritual heart of Lao Cai city. Situated on a picturesque hill at the confluence of the Red River and Nam Thi River, the temple serves as a symbol of resilience and defense of Vietnam's borders. It is a place where the history of great military victories harmoniously intertwines with panoramic views of mountains and nature.

What you need to know
The temple was erected during the Le dynasty period (1680–1705) and is dedicated to Tran Hung Dao, the legendary commander who repelled Mongol invasions three times. The complex is built in a traditional T-shape and includes shrines dedicated to the Holy Mother and protective deities.
A special pride of the grounds is a 300-year-old banyan tree — recognized as a national heritage of Vietnam, beneath which lies the shrine of Goddess Thuong Ngan. Following extensive restoration completed in 2024, the temple is fully open to visitors and pilgrims.
The best time to visit is during the spring festivals in the first lunar month, as well as summer when the climate in the temple's forest area is most comfortable.
