Waterfall Cave (Chả Nghéo) is a recently discovered geological phenomenon located in the strictly protected zone of Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park. The site became famous for its region-rare cascade of about 350 meters in height, formed by a water stream descending through a vertical sinkhole. To date, the cave is closed to visitors due to the extreme difficulty of access and dangerous terrain.

What you need to know
The cave was thoroughly explored in March–April 2026 by an international team of experts. The entrance to the site is an almost sheer, narrow sinkhole 350 meters deep. Inside, there is a powerful water stream fed by surface forest runoff. According to British speleologist Howard Lambert, Chả Nghéo is among the most challenging caves to explore—full-scale work inside requires professional safety equipment and strict adherence to safety measures due to the risk of rockfalls and sudden water surges. Research is ongoing, as extremely low temperatures and difficult terrain have not yet allowed for a full assessment of the site's ecological significance.
