The island's history began in 1975 when Soviet scientists brought the first macaques here for scientific research. The island is inhabited by rhesus macaques and long-tailed macaques. They roam freely in the forest area, so it is important to follow safety guidelines: do not carry crinkly bags or food, and avoid direct eye contact while showing teeth (a wide smile).
