The Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is a unique protected area that serves as a remnant of once-vast coastal mangrove forests. Spanning 130 hectares, the sanctuary is home to over 100 bird species, including rare specimens from the Red Book. It is an ideal spot for nature lovers looking to see the natural habitat of storks, egrets, and cormorants in the Mekong Delta.

What you need to know
The sanctuary was officially recognized as a protected area in 1986. It boasts tremendous biodiversity: in addition to 40,000–60,000 birds, the ecosystem supports 150 animal species and 109 plant species. The forest consists of mangroves, bamboo, and palms.
Tips for your visit:
- Time: Arrive at dawn (around 6:00 AM) or before sunset (5:30 PM–6:00 PM), as birds fly out to forage during the day.
- Equipment: Be sure to bring binoculars or a telephoto lens, as nests are located high up in the trees.
- Transport: You can rent an electric car on-site (around 250,000 VND) to comfortably explore the perimeter and observation towers.
The rainy season is the best time to visit, when migratory birds return for nesting. Peak activity occurs in August and September.
