St. Joseph's Church (Nhà thờ Lớn Hà Nội) is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hanoi and a striking example of French colonial architecture. Built in the late 19th century on the ruins of an ancient pagoda, it has become a symbol of Catholicism in the region and one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Vietnamese capital.

History
The cathedral was consecrated on December 24, 1886. It was erected on the site of the ruins of the Bao Thien Pagoda (1057), emphasizing the historical layering of this place, which was the administrative center of Tonkin.
Architecture
The building is designed in the neo-Gothic style, reminiscent of the famous Notre-Dame de Paris. Two 31.5-meter bell towers and a granite slab facade give it a monumental appearance. Inside, visitors will find high stained-glass windows, ribbed vaults, and an imperial-style wooden altar. An important addition is the 1,850-pipe organ installed in 2022.
Modern Times
The cathedral remains an active center for Hanoi's Catholic community of about 400,000 people. On weekends and holidays, the square in front of the cathedral fills with believers listening to the mass through installed loudspeakers.
