What it is and why

In Vietnam popular several formats of volunteering. In mountain areas, for example in Sapa or Ha Giang, can help in schools or local educational centers, teaching children English or crafts. On coast popular ecological initiatives: cleaning of beaches, preservation of sea turtles or help in rehabilitation centers for wild animals.

Alternative option — work on permaculture projects and eco-farms (WOOFing). You live in local family, help with harvesting of coffee or rice, learn secrets of organic agriculture and life of Vietnamese from inside. This is not about rest, but about full immersion, long working day and simple, but sincere cultural exchange.

Always check visa conditions: for legal "volunteering" in some cases may require work permit or special status.
Be ready for household spartan conditions — often this is life in houses of local residents without usual comfort.
Minimum term of participation usually is 1-2 weeks, many hosts reluctantly accept "tourist for couple of days".

Caution

Never pay large sums in cash before arrival to place and personal meeting with organizers.
Beware of "volunteering" in shelters for animals, behind which stand unethical commercial interests.
