What it is and why

Vietnam is gradually turning into a world-class surf destination. There are no giant dangers here, but there are endless sandy beaches and excellent schools with Russian-speaking or local instructors who will put you on the board in a couple of sessions.

Peak season in central Vietnam (Da Nang) falls in autumn and winter, when stable swells arrive. In the southern part (Mui Ne, Vung Tau), the season is more oriented towards longboard and beginner level in winter months. Infrastructure is developed: schools offer not only rental of all types of boards, but also storage and transfers to spots.

Popular among longboard lovers. Many schools, stable wind.

Wild option, minimum tourists and excellent waves in winter season.

Tips

Look for spots with sandy bottom: this is the ideal option for learning without risk of hitting the reef.
Best time for riding is dawn, when wind is minimal and water is smooth (glassy).
Do not neglect rash guard: sun in the tropics is extremely active, you can burn in 30 minutes in the water.
Always check current forecast with local rental shops: waves can change literally in a couple of hours due to tide.

Caution

Be careful with rip currents on Da Nang beaches in winter period.
Watch carefully for debris in water after storms in urban areas.
