SUP surfing

Balance, calm and view of Vietnam from water

ActiveSplash 1–3 hours Year-round (depends on region) 4 places

What it is and why

SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding) in Vietnam experiences boom. Unlike noisy tourist boats, board allows to silently slide past limestone rocks or rice fields, remaining alone with nature. In calm waters SUP suits even beginners, and for experienced athletes sea surf-SUP will become excellent training.

Choose locations depending on goals: sea lagoons offer crystal water and snorkeling, and river routes in Mekong delta or karst valleys of north give atmosphere of meditation. Equipment rental is available practically on any popular resort, from Da Nang to Phu Quoc island.

Tips

  • Go on water at dawn (06:00–08:00): at this time sea is maximally calm, and air is not too hot yet.
  • Always use leash (safety cable) and wear life jacket, even if confidently hold on water.
  • Do not forget about sun protection: cream with SPF 50+, cap and sunglasses on strap — mandatory set.
  • For photo sessions on water use waterproof case with float for phone instead of ordinary aquapack.

Caution

  • Beware of strong tidal currents in open sea bays — always in advance learn direction of wind and tides.
  • Avoid doing SUP during strong storms and in typhoon season (especially Central Vietnam in October-November).
