Snorkeling

Exploration of underwater world in crystal bays

ChillWet 2–6 hours February–September; in south — year-round 4 places

What it is and why

Vietnamese coast is strewn with islands with rich marine life. Snorkeling here is about warm, heated by sun bays, where around reefs swim schools of parrotfish and sea urchins. Most often snorkeling organized in format of boat trips for whole day, where included lunch on board and all necessary equipment.

Choice of places depends on your style: in Nha Trang and on Mun island — this is mass, proven by years attraction with accent on service. In Con Dao or on remote islands of Phu Quoc you will find more wild nature, where can find untouched sections of reefs and swim in solitude, renting private boat from local fishermen.

Tips

  • Always use sun cream resistant to water and safe for corals — back burns in 20 minutes in water.
  • Swim only in t-shirt (rashguard) for snorkeling: it protects from sun and accidental touches of jellyfish.
  • Check mask for tightness: if hair gets under seal, mask will leak.
  • Do not touch corals with hands — they very fragile, and some (fire) can leave painful burn.

Caution

  • Jellyfish: in rainy season or after storms in water their number increases, use protective suits.
  • Currents: when snorkeling from boat always watch direction of drift, that boat not go far ahead.
  • Beware of sea urchins in shallow water — their needles very fragile and painful.
