What it is and why

Rock climbing in Vietnam is a combination of technically difficult routes and incredible views. The main epicenter is Cat Ba island in Lan Ha Bay, where limestone cliffs sheer drop into the sea. Hundreds of routes of different difficulty categories are laid here: from simple for beginners to professional multi-pitches.

Besides the sea coast, it is worth paying attention to deep water solo — climbing without belay over deep waters of bays. At the same time, high-altitude Da Lat offers granite rocks, ideal for those who prefer cool mountain air and training on natural relief with experienced instructors.

Tips

For climbing on Cat Ba island it is better to hire local guides — they know well the condition of bolts and features of slate.
Always check the weather forecast: with high humidity and after rain limestone becomes very slippery.
Arrive at the rocks early morning (before 8:00) to have time to climb before the sun starts to bake the vertical wall.
If you plan DWS (deep water solo), be sure to study the water depth at high and low tide and the presence of sharp stones near the surface.

Caution

Do not engage in rock climbing alone without communication system, as many coastal areas are remote and hard to access.
Avoid climbing during severe tropical storm season (August–October), as rockfalls are possible.
