Rafting
Adrenaline on rapids of mountain rivers
What it is and why
Rafting in the country is just gaining momentum, so here you will not meet "conveyor" tourist rafting. Main routes are concentrated in mountain regions, where rivers after rainy season turn into turbulent streams with rapids of 2–3 difficulty category. This is an ideal way to see untouched nature of central highlands or northern mountains, where it is impossible to reach by regular tourist transfer.
Most rafting is organized by professional teams using certified equipment. Depending on region, river relief varies from dynamic sections with sharp drops to calm riffles allowing to enjoy views of tropical forests. Mandatory briefing with instructor in English is an integral part of any professional tour.

- Always check for international insurance covering extreme sports.
- Choose morning departures: by noon water level in narrow gorges may change, and sun becomes too active.
- Use sunscreen even in cloudy weather — reflection from water enhances ultraviolet.
- Be sure to use footwear with heel fixation (rafting sandals or aqua shoes), flip-flops are a bad choice for rapids.
Caution
- Absolutely not recommended to engage in rafting alone or with unlicensed guides.
- During periods of heavy tropical rains the river may become too dangerous due to risk of sudden floods and landslides — follow forecasts of local operators.
