Tips

Start with studying tones — this is foundation, without which you simply will not be understood, even if you learn many words.
Use applications like Duolingo or LingApp before arrival, to at least get used to sound of language.
Do not fear mistakes: Vietnamese are very patient and will be happy to help you choose correct intonation.
Agree on lessons in informal setting — coffee with teacher in local coffee shop teaches "live" conversational language better than any textbook.

Avoid doubtful online offers from "private individuals" — better choose verified language schools or university programs.
Consider different accent: northern dialect (Hanoi) and southern (Ho Chi Minh) strongly differ in pronunciation.
