- Start with studying tones — this is foundation, without which you simply will not be understood, even if you learn many words.
- Use applications like Duolingo or LingApp before arrival, to at least get used to sound of language.
- Do not fear mistakes: Vietnamese are very patient and will be happy to help you choose correct intonation.
- Agree on lessons in informal setting — coffee with teacher in local coffee shop teaches "live" conversational language better than any textbook.
