What it is and why

Buffalo riding is not an amusement park, but a way to touch traditional lifestyle of Vietnamese farmer. Buffaloes in Vietnam are full-fledged family members and main helpers in the field, therefore communication with them requires respect. You can sit on the back of animal (usually with help of herder) and make a walk along the edge of flooded fields, where best views of local nature open.

This adventure is ideal for those who look for "that very" authentic photo in conical hat non la. Movements of buffalo are very smooth and slow, which allows to relax and enjoy panoramic views. In most places guide leads animal under reins, controlling route while you are in saddle.

Tips

Choose morning hours (before 9:00) or pre-sunset time — at noon buffaloes prefer to rest in shade or swamp.
Wear clothing that you do not mind getting dirty — contact with animal and village dust are inevitable.
Be sure to ask the herder to show how to properly approach the buffalo without scaring it.
Do not use camera flash at point-blank range — this can irritate animals.

Caution

Buffalo is a large and strong animal. Always listen to herder recommendations and do not try to control the animal yourself without supervision.
Avoid riding during season of heavy rains, as roads and paths become too slippery.
