What it is and why
Birdwatching in Vietnam is a meditative journey to the most remote corners of national parks. The country is located on the most important migration route, so besides permanent inhabitants, here you can meet rare migratory birds. Morning hours in forests of Da Lat or in wetlands of Mekong Delta give opportunity to see unique species without leaving natural habitat.
For success you will need patience, quality binoculars and preferably a local ornithologist guide. Professionals choose areas around Da Lat due to high level of endemism, while lovers of exotic go south to Mekong Delta to observe herons and rare storks near mangrove thickets. Unlike other activities, silence is important here — birds are very shy.

Tips
- Best time to start is dawn (5:30–7:00), when birds are most active and singing.
- Choose clothing in neutral colors (khaki, olive, gray). Bright colors will immediately reveal your presence.
- Take a bird identification map of Vietnam with you or download an app like Merlin Bird ID for sound classification.
- If planning serious filming, buy a camera cover to minimize glare and movement.
Caution
- Be careful with malaria and other tropical diseases in dense jungles: be sure to use strong repellent.
- Do not use audio lures to attract birds too often — this causes stress to nesting species.
