History and significance
The temple was built between 1860 and 1870 in memory of Nguyen Trung Truc, a fisherman who became the leader of the resistance against French colonial expansion. In 1988, the Ministry of Culture and Information of Vietnam designated the temple as a national cultural and historical monument.
The main attraction is the primary temple in Rach Gia, which houses a bronze statue of the hero and his ashes. The walls of the sanctuary are richly decorated with altars and paintings illustrating the exploits of Nguyen Trung Truc, including the famous battle at the Nhat Tao canal. Every year in late August to early September of the lunar calendar, a large-scale festival is held here, drawing over a million pilgrims.
