What you need to know
The complex was officially opened on July 26, 2009, in memory of the 81 days and nights of fierce fighting during the 1972 Spring Offensive. The architecture of the memorial is imbued with symbols of courage and sorrow:
Memorial building
housing the sacred bell (khánh chuông).
Flower-floating pier:
a hexagonal structure symbolizing the mass grave of the fallen, extending directly into the waters of the Thach Han River.
Alley of 81 crape myrtle trees:
each tree represents one day of the great standoff.
Reliefs:
adorned with quatrains in memory of the war's victims.
On the opposite bank of the river, you can see the symmetrical Ben Tha Hoa Bac complex. Visiting this place is especially moving on commemorative dates: July 27 (Remembrance Day for the Fallen) and during the Tet holiday. The complex is part of the "Quang Tri Citadel" National Special Monument.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, when weather conditions are most comfortable for walking along the open memorial avenues.
