What you need to know
The temple was built in honor of the national hero Trần Hưng Đạo (Trần Quốc Tuấn, ? – 1300), who became famous for his great victories over the Mongol troops, including the legendary Battle of Bạch Đằng in 1288. He is revered as a saint in traditional Vietnamese culture.
The temple was built between 1863 and 1869, and in 1903, under Emperor Thành Thái, it was restored and acquired its current appearance. In 1992, the site was included in the list of national cultural and historical landmarks.
The main gates of the temple are built in a classical style with eight roofs on two tiers, and the building itself offers a beautiful view of Moon Lake. Large-scale festivals are held here annually: in honor of the Battle of Bạch Đằng (3rd lunar month) and the commemoration day of the commander (8th lunar month).
