Thang Tam Pagoda is a significant spiritual center for the fishing community of Vung Tau, founded during the reign of Emperor Minh Mang. The complex unites three important sanctuaries — the Main Temple, the Temple of the Five Goddesses, and the famous Holy Whale Sanctuary, which houses the bones of whales revered by locals as divine protectors of the sea.

History and Purpose
The temple complex was founded by three military commanders sent by Emperor Gia Long to protect the lands. Today it is a national historical and cultural monument preserving 12 royal decrees confirming its status.
Main Attractions
- Holy Whale Sanctuary (Lang Ong Nam Hai): A unique site where whale skeletons are kept in glass cabinets, including a massive 18-meter specimen washed ashore in 1831.
- Architecture: Following a 1965 restoration, the building was rebuilt in stone while preserving traditional Vietnamese temple design styles.
- Festivals: The complex hosts three major festivals, including the vibrant Nghinh Ong festival in the eighth lunar month featuring fishing boat processions and traditional opera.
