The Côn Đảo Historical Site is a landmark destination that traces Vietnam's complex journey to independence. The complex, which includes former prison blocks and "tiger cages," preserves the memory of more than 200,000 prisoners. Today, it is not only a witness to a "hell on earth," but also a museum that recounts the courage, education, and resilience of political prisoners during the era of the anti-colonial struggle.

What you need to know
The Côn Đảo complex is officially recognized as a special national heritage site. Its territory covers 110.69 hectares and includes 17 historical sites.
Main exhibitions:
- Côn Đảo Museum: opened in 2013, it houses about 2,000 historical artifacts, photographs, and manuscripts.
- History of Resistance: the complex demonstrates how, between 1945 and 1954, the prison transformed into a "revolutionary school" where illiteracy among prisoners was completely eradicated.
- System Heritage: you will see preserved isolation cells, prison blocks, and the infamous "tiger cages."
In 2026, visitors can view the "Lotus in Stone" exhibition dedicated to female political prisoners (free until July 31, 2026).
The dry season offers the most comfortable temperature for walking around the complex grounds.
