West Lake (Hồ Tây) is the heart of northwestern Hanoi and a favorite recreation spot for locals. It is not just a 5.3 km² body of water, but a true cultural hub with centuries of history, where ancient Buddhist shrines, traditional craft villages, and modern luxury residential complexes coexist along its 17-kilometer perimeter.

What you need to know
West Lake was formed from an ancient channel of the Red River. In the past, it bore many mystical names, such as "Golden Buffalo Lake" and "Misty Lake." During the Lý and Trần dynasties, the residences of kings and nobility were located here.
Today, this place combines spiritual heritage with active recreation:
- Religious sites: There are over 20 temples located here. Be sure to visit the ancient Trấn Quốc Pagoda (6th century), the sacred Quán Thánh Temple, and the Kim Liên Pagoda.
- Traditions: The surrounding villages (Nghi Tàm, Quảng An) still preserve centuries-old crafts, such as growing peach trees and flowers.
- Leisure: A 17–18 km promenade runs around the lake, ideal for cycling and walking, and especially popular during sunset hours.
Dry season with pleasant temperatures, most comfortable for exploring temples and walking around the lake.
