The French Don Cao Fort is a landmark historical structure built in 1925 to control the Dong Van valley. It is a unique geosat of the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark, offering not only an immersion into the region's colonial history but also breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the high-mountain landscapes.

What you need to know
The Don Cao Fort was built by the French after the capture of Ha Giang for strategic territorial control. Architecturally, it consists of two levels: a lower bunker with niches and an upper level with a spacious courtyard and viewing platforms. The 80-centimeter-thick walls are made of fusulinid and red striped limestone, characteristic of this geopark.
In 2013, the site was partially restored. The climb up to the fort via a 97-step staircase is quite strenuous and requires caution, as there are no safety railings. However, the reward is a panoramic view of the valley, Tu San mountain, and the Si Phai pass.
Early morning and late afternoon are most favorable for soft lighting and best visibility.
