The temple was erected during the reign of Emperor Lê Cảnh Hưng. Its main structure is built in the shape of the Chinese character «一» (one), reflecting the classic canons of Vietnamese architecture of those years. In 2011, the site underwent major restoration, allowing its historic appearance to be preserved.

Phu Lao Pagoda is famous for its exceptional wood carvings. The load-bearing columns and beams depict the four sacred animals, symbols of the seasons, and the eight points of time. The virtuosity of the craftsmen is evident in the finest details: dragons whose bodies resemble spring leaves with apricot flowers, as well as vibrant scenes from human life—from martial arts to intimate family moments.
