Phu Quy Island: The Wild and Authentic Gem of the South China Sea

Phu Quy Island (Phú Quý) is an isolated volcanic archipelago in Binh Thuan province, located about 120 km east of the Phan Thiet coast. Unlike popular resorts, Phu Quy remained a closed military zone for a long time and opened up to mass tourism relatively recently. The island has preserved its pristine landscape, where black volcanic rocks contrast with emerald water and snow-white sand. Due to the absence of large hotels and chain fast food, this place is ideal for those who are looking for silence, privacy, and want to see authentic Vietnam.

Best Places and Activities on the Island

Trieu Duong Bay: The most popular and gently sloping beach on the island with fine sand and a shady grove of casuarina trees. The sea here is calm and shallow, making it a great spot for swimming and evening picnics with locals.
Bai Nho Beach & Ganh Hang: A small picturesque bay at the foot of a hill, surrounded by sharp volcanic rocks. The water here is incredibly clear and has a bright turquoise hue. Nearby, natural rock pools (Infinity Pools) are hidden in the cliffs, becoming a popular photo spot.
Cao Cat Peak & Linh Son Pagoda: One of the most sacred places on the island. Climbing to the top of Cao Cat Mountain, you will see unique weathered rock formations resembling a layer cake, and an ancient pagoda with a Buddha statue. From here, you get the best panoramic view of the northern part of the island.
Phu Quy Lighthouse (Cao Mountain): Located at an altitude of over 100 meters above sea level. The road to it leads through shady green slopes, and from the lighthouse viewing platform, you can survey the entire archipelago and the endless ocean.
The Lonely Tree: An iconic tree growing right on the rocky seashore against the background of the endless horizon. This is the most popular spot to watch the sunset and take atmospheric photos.
Excursion to Hon Tranh Islet: A small neighboring islet that can be reached in 10-15 minutes by canoe. People go here for snorkeling over coral reefs, SUP-boarding, and relaxing on completely wild beaches.

Best Time to Visit

Ideal Season (December to June): The best period for a trip. The sea during these months is as calm as possible (especially in March and April), the water is clear, and ferry rolling is minimal.
Storm Season (September to November): A period of strong winds and typhoons. Ferry service to the mainland can be completely suspended for several days or weeks, so trips at this time are strongly discouraged.

How to Get There

Since there is no airport on the island, the route includes a mandatory water crossing:

To Phan Thiet City: First, you need to take a bus, train, or limousine from Ho Chi Minh City or Nha Trang to Phan Thiet.
Ferry to the Island: At the port of Phan Thiet, you need to board a high-speed ferry (Superdong, Phu Quy Express). Travel time across the open sea ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the weather. Travelers prone to motion sickness are strongly advised to take pills before boarding.

Important Tips

Cash: There are very few ATMs on the island, and they are often out of order or run out of cash on weekends. Be sure to withdraw enough Vietnamese Dong on the mainland.
Transport on the Island: There is no public transport here. The best way to get around is by renting a scooter, which can be arranged right at your guesthouse (about 100,000 - 150,000 VND per day).
Dinner on Floating Rafts: Be sure to visit the floating raft restaurants (Làng bè), where you can choose the freshest seafood (especially famous local king crabs and lobsters) right from the nets.
