Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park: The Cave Kingdom of Vietnam

The Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Quảng Bình Province in Central Vietnam. This region is famous for Asia's oldest karst mountains, dating back over 400 million years. The true jewel of the park is its underground world: over 300 majestic caves are hidden here, including the largest cave on the planet — Son Doong. It is an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts, trekkers, and cavers.

Main Caves and Attractions

Phong Nha Cave: The park's main landmark. Tourists are taken inside the cave on traditional boats along a picturesque underground river. You can see giant chambers and illuminated stalactites and stalagmites.
Paradise Cave (Động Thiên Đường): Considered one of the most beautiful dry caves in the world. It features the longest wooden boardwalk in Vietnam (about 1 km) for a safe and comfortable view of futuristic flowstone formations.
Dark Cave (Hang Tối): The best choice for thrill-seekers. The tour includes a zipline ride over the river, exploring the cave with headlamps, swimming in a natural mud bath, and kayaking.
Nước Moọc Spring Eco-Trail: A picturesque nature reserve with a turquoise river in the middle of a tropical forest. People come here to escape the heat, swim in the cool water, and go kayaking.
Extreme Expeditions: Experienced travelers can join multi-day camping tours to remote caves such as Hang Én, Hang Pygmy, and the legendary Son Doong. These routes are only accessible when accompanied by certified guides.

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (February – August): The ideal time. The weather is sunny and river water levels are low, granting access to all caves.
Rainy Season (September – January): A period of heavy downpours and potential typhoons. Most underground routes are flooded and closed for safety reasons.

How to Get There

The closest transportation hub to the national park is the city of Đồng Hới. You can get there by:

Plane from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
Train or sleeper bus from any major tourism hub in Vietnam. From Đồng Hới, you can reach the tourist town of Phong Nha in 45-60 minutes by bus, taxi, or rented motorbike.
