Nam Du Archipelago: The Maldives of Southern Vietnam

Nam Du Archipelago (Nam Du) is a picturesque group of 21 islands located in Kien Giang Province, about 80 km off the coast of Rach Gia City. For a long time, this hidden gem remained in the shadow of neighboring Phu Quoc, allowing it to preserve its authenticity and wild nature. Nam Du attracts travelers with white sandy beaches, century-old coconut palms leaning toward the water, and incredibly clear turquoise water. It is an ideal location for a budget island getaway, snorkeling, and complete immersion in a secluded tropical paradise.

Best Places and Activities on the Islands

Bai Men Beach (Bãi Mến): The most beautiful and famous beach on the main island of the archipelago (Hon Lon). It is a secluded cove with soft white sand, calm sea, and a grove of coconut palms, some of which are over 70 years old. It offers ideal conditions for swimming and photo shoots.
Hon Dau Island (Hòn Dầu): A popular stop during boat tours. The island is almost uninhabited, covered in dense forest, and famous for its "Instagrammable" spots—wooden swings over the water and palms leaning over the sea. The shade from the trees makes it a great spot for daytime relaxation.
Hon Mau Island (Hòn Mậu): A true coral paradise. This island features 5 of the most beautiful beaches, among which Bai Truong (sandy) and Bai Da Den (a unique beach with smooth black volcanic stones) stand out. The island is great for snorkeling due to the proximity of the reefs to the shore.
Nam Du Lighthouse: Located on a hilltop about 300 meters above sea level, this lighthouse is considered one of the highest in Vietnam. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire archipelago and a scattering of small green islets in the ocean.
Fishing Village in Bai Chet Bay (Bãi Chệt): The main port and inhabited center of the archipelago. It is worth coming here early in the morning or at sunset to observe the daily life of local fishermen and buy the freshest seafood straight from the boats at very low prices.

Best Time to Visit

Ideal Season (December to April): The golden time for a trip. The weather is dry, the sky is clear, and the sea is calm and transparent. During these months, the risk of seasickness is minimal, and the water is perfect for snorkeling.
Rainy Season (May to November): A period of frequent tropical downpours. Peak storms occur from July to September. Ferries are often canceled during this time, so planning a trip to Nam Du in this period is risky.

How to Get There

The journey to Nam Du consists of overland and water stages:

To Rach Gia City (Rạch Giá): From Ho Chi Minh City, you can take a comfortable sleeper bus (about 5–6 hours of travel) or fly via domestic airlines to Rach Gia Airport.
Ferry to the Island: High-speed ferries (Superdong, Phu Quoc Express) depart daily from the Rach Gia port. The travel time to Nam Du is about 2.5 hours. It is recommended to book tickets in advance, especially before weekends.

Important Tips

Electricity and Freshwater Limitations: Please note that resources are limited on Nam Du. In some budget guesthouses, electricity is supplied on a schedule (or turned off for a few hours during the day), and hot water is not available everywhere.
Infrastructure: There are no large hotels or ATMs on the islands. Withdraw enough Vietnamese Dong cash in Rach Gia. Mobile internet (especially Viettel) works stably, but connection may drop in remote bays.
Local Transport: To get around the main island, it is best to rent a scooter from your guesthouse owners. To visit small uninhabited islands, you need to rent a wooden boat from locals or buy a group day tour at the port.
